T-Butyldimethylsilane, also known as tert-Butyldimethylsilane or TBDMS, is an organosilicon compound that is primarily used in the field of organic chemistry as a protecting agent. Its molecular formula is C6H16Si and its structure consists of a t-butyl group (C4H9) and two methyl groups (CH3), bonded to a silicon atom. This substance is colorless, has a mild smell, and is insoluble in water. It's used to protect reactive hydroxy, amine, or carboxy groups during chemical reactions, preventing them from unwanted participation and can be removed afterwards with ease under controlled conditions.
