SILANE CANDIDATE SELECTION
Introduction
Mineral fillers are widely used in polymer materials, but inorganic fillers and organic polymers have very different surface characteristics. Poor compatibility between the two phases can limit dispersion and weaken the filler–polymer interface.
Silane coupling agents can modify suitable mineral surfaces and help create a more compatible interface with selected polymer matrices.
Interface Concept
Silica, glass and other suitable hydroxyl-containing inorganic surfaces can provide sites for silane interaction.
The organic functional group is selected according to the chemistry of the resin or polymer surrounding the filler.
Selection Process
Silica, glass fiber, quartz, clay, aluminosilicate or another inorganic material?
Epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester, acrylic, polyamide, elastomer or another matrix?
Evaluate amino, epoxy, methacrylate or another functionality according to resin chemistry.
Confirm dosage, processing method and final composite performance experimentally.
Selection Guide
